Bias In Software Reviews

Oct. 2023

Bias in software reviews can mislead buyers seeking reliable information to make informed decisions about software subscriptions. Why does this occur? The short answer: Financial incentives, connections to software providers or a lack of knowledge.

Top-10 Lists and Blogs with Paid Sponsorships: Financial agreements with software companies influence many “professional” software reviews posted on blogs and websites. Tech Websites showing Top-10 lists, as well as Blogs, charge software firms fees to be included. There is no in-depth assessment of the entire market to determine which firms offer the best software or functionality. However, anyone visiting those sites would assume these are expert reviews.

Software Review Sites: Software firms with larger marketing budgets may be ranked/placed higher up lists and provided more space to list out their features and benefits. Compare rank by user ratings vs. the site’s own recommendations. The ones the site recommends are firms willing to pay for that higher ranking.

User Reviews: User reviews should also be read with a note of caution. They reflect one person’s experience, which may differ from another person’s.

Of greater concern: The major software review sites allow software companies to offer incentives (such as reward cards/vouchers) in return for providing a review. There are no disclosures that this was a paid review. How many people are likely to accept a gift and then write a negative review? Fake reviews are also widespread. It is far too easy to pay 3rd parties to post positive reviews as well as negative reviews of competitors, which means user ratings are not the panacea some would have us believe.

Key Issues Caused by Bias

Lack of Side-By-Side Comparisons: Too often, “expert” reviews neglect to do in-depth side-by-side comparisons of the features and functionality of rival solutions.

Lack of Depth: “Expert” Reviews frequently lack depth and are unable to offer thorough insights into the functionality, usability, security and scalability of the product.

Absence Of Prioritization: Reviewers highlight the characteristics of various software solutions without considering which aspects are most important for users, or use cases.

Subjective Best-For Categories: In numerous software evaluations, it is said that a particular software is "the best" for a given task, e.g. "Software1 is best for A, Software2 is best for B." When buyers need solid performance in at least 10 or 20 features, seeing best in a single feature adds little value and is simply deceptive marketing.

Promotion of Sponsored Content: The issue is exacerbated by blogs written by people with limited business experience who essentially copy information from other blogs and sponsored reviews, which maintains the same biases present in paid ratings.

Inadequacy for Short-Listing: Existing “expert” reviews are an inadequate source of information for short-listing software contenders.
